June Watts
After gaining a BA Hons. degree in Drama and English Literature at Bristol University, June trained at the Bristol Old Vic Drama School, which led to wide experience in repertory theatre, T.V. and films. She also has a Certificate in Drama Therapy. Circle Dance exploded into June’s life in 1982. It was then known as Sacred Dance. The thread of the Dance that she took hold of that May afternoon at Hawkwood College in Stroud, led her to the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland, where the Dance originated. June took all the Sacred Dance courses available there, culminating in the training for would-be teachers. Having established a fortnightly group near Stroud, June then trained for three weeks in Holland on an intensive with Friedl Klocke-Eibl, who had trained with Bernard Wosien, the Master who brought the gift of the Dance to Findhorn in the mid '70s. June had the privilege of |
dancing with him the last time he visited Findhorn before his death - a peak experience in her life!
Circle Dance, gradually became a full-time occupation. She felt strong guidance in this and says that her life has been, and still is, sustained physically as well as spiritually by the Dance! Over the years June has run many regular groups in Gloucestershire, England, and in Glastonbury, as well as giving dance workshops in France, Greece, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Canada, USA, Iceland and Britain also introductory training courses for people wishing to teach the Dance. |
June’s dance choreography is diverse, highly original and hugely popular worldwide. Music includes a variety of styles - pop, reggae, meditative chants and classical music in addition to ethnic folk. Dances are continually being created from the experiences and needs and yearnings of now. Although I talk of choreographing the dances attributed to me, it feels rather that they come to me.”
June’s dance events always have a theme. In the past she has linked the Dance with myth, storytelling, drama, Shiatsu, Psychosynthesis, Runes, and dream work. Now, apart from her ongoing commitment to dance for healing our relationship with the Earth, her main desire is to raise consciousness through focusing on depth and energy in the Dance. June’s work enables dancers to explore the deeper levels on which the Dance operates - what lies beyond the steps, to be aware of what the body is doing when it dances, and how energy moves through and around the body, how it can be raised, and how playing with the juxtaposition of dances with different energies can bring balance. Much of her unique approach and experience is expressed in her book - 'Circle Dancing - Celebrating the Sacred in Dance'. http://www.junewatts.com/dancingwords.php |
